Empowering comfort through science and sensory control during every stage of labor.
Discover a simple, science-backed tool designed to help you stay grounded and comfortable during labor.
A traditional labor comb is a small handheld tool used during contractions to provide a focused sensory distraction. It works by pressing the teeth of the comb into the palm, activating the body’s natural pain-gating response to reduce perceived discomfort. While the concept is simple, many of these combs are made of brittle plastic that can easily snap under pressure. They also provide only a single narrow row of contact points, which limits the range and depth of stimulation. Keep reading to learn how our design improves on these limitations to become the preferred choice among mothers, midwives, doctors, and doulas around the world.
TLDR:
Your brain can only process so many sensory signals at once. By applying firm, safe pressure to the palms, tools like ours send strong, non-harmful sensations that compete with pain signals. This helps the brain focus on the new input instead of the discomfort.
The Science:
The Gate Control Theory of pain, first introduced in the 1960s, helps explain how controlled sensory input can reduce the perception of pain. Pain signals from the body travel to the spinal cord before reaching the brain, but those signals can be interrupted or “gated” by other sensory input, such as touch or pressure. When strong, consistent tactile input is applied to the hands, those competing signals can effectively reduce how much pain information passes through the gate to the brain.
Research shows that the hands contain an exceptionally high density of nerve endings—over 17,000 pain receptors in each hand—which makes them highly responsive to sensory input. The uterus and vaginal canal, by contrast, have far fewer pain receptors overall. This means that firm, controlled pressure in the hands can generate strong competing signals that reach the spinal cord more quickly and can partially override slower, deeper pain signals coming from the pelvic region.
When used during labor, this principle allows your brain to focus on the sharper, localized sensation in your palms rather than the widespread discomfort of contractions. It is a natural, body-driven way to help regulate pain perception, enhance focus, and maintain a sense of control through each stage of labor.

Traditional labor combs rely on a single narrow edge to create stimulation, which limits how much sensory input the hand can actually register. The Prickly Pal design expands that concept into a full-hand experience, covering the palm and fingers with multiple rows of firm tactile points that can be adjusted in pressure and placement. This broader surface area activates far more sensory nerves, producing stronger, more balanced input for effective pain gating.
Unlike fragile plastic combs that can snap or lose effectiveness under pressure, our tools are engineered for durability and control. Each piece is 3D printed using strong, medical-safe PLA or flexible TPU, allowing mothers to apply anything from light contact to deep, sustained pressure without worrying about breakage. The design intentionally stops short of puncturing the skin, keeping stimulation safe, repeatable, and within your control.
Expecting mothers, doulas, and nurses around the world call it their “labor lifesaver.” The combination of strong tactile input, ergonomic shape, and reliability provides a grounding focus through each contraction, helping redirect pain, calm the nervous system, and restore a sense of control during one of the most powerful experiences a body can go through.
Every Prickly Pal is thoughtfully engineered with real feedback from mothers, doulas, and birth professionals. What began as a simple alternative to the fragile, disposable labor comb has evolved into a trusted, reusable sensory tool designed to support every stage of the birthing journey.
Each tool is 3D printed in-house by our small, family-run team using precise, high-quality materials. Jessie, the founder and mother behind the brand, works alongside her husband Zack, a former NASA aerospace engineer, to ensure every texture, curve, and surface is intentional. The result is a product that feels solid, reliable, and ready when you need it most.
We test every design for comfort, safety, and effectiveness, from the sharpness of each spike to the strength of the core. Because we print and finish each piece ourselves, we can ensure consistent quality and durability that mothers can depend on during one of life’s most important moments.
